Conditions at the start were great. Low 20c temperatures and slight cloudy cover. We set off and got stuck into a good pace initially. A narrow miss with a squirrel which was struck by the cyclist ahead was the only near miss or potential incident on my way to the first feed station at Turners Hill. The riding through small fields and skirting Crawley were a delightful easy warmup.

After meeting a “shoe buddy” and chatting at Turners Hill stop, we continued south towards the beautiful Ashdown Forest. Once more, a pleasurable ride at good pace. All just a warmup for “Kidds Hill” known as “The Wall”. The hill itself was sandwiched between 2 more slightly lesser, but still draining climbs. After happily staying on the pedals all the way to the top, a brief photo stop before continuing to Forest Row, the 2nd feed stop.

That hill had taken its toll. Combined with the full sun, and temperatures approaching 30c, I was starting to cramp. The final 20 mile leg was a mental slog, with frequent stretch stops to try to keep the legs from locking up. Spirits were kept up by the incredible countryside and associated views, and kind words of encouragement from other cyclists.
After a final unscheduled stop at Smallfield co-op for a chocolate bar and lucozade, I had the final 8 miles to go until a much deserved beer courtesy of Drop Kick brewery, and the all important medal collection.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable ride, and a stunning route.
Without quite hitting my target time and pace, I feel there’s unfinished business with this event, drawing my competitive side back to address it next year.
If you fancy getting involved next year, and don’t forget there are shorter routes options too, keep an eye on the website www.runseries.co.uk/ride-reigate/
